What are ceramic capacitors?

2026-10-08 14:00:05

Ceramic capacitors are among the most widely used passive components in the electronics industry. Constructed using ceramic material as the dielectric and featuring fired-on silver electrodes, they serve as fundamental core components in various electronic devices due to their compact size, high stability, and cost-effectiveness. As essential electronic components, they are utilized across sectors such as consumer electronics, industrial control, automotive systems, and precision electronics, playing a critical role in voltage regulation, filtering, coupling, and bypassing within electronic circuits.

In terms of standard industry classification, ceramic capacitors fall into two main categories: Class I and Class II. Class I capacitors primarily utilize materials such as C0G/NP0; they offer excellent temperature stability, with capacitance remaining virtually unaffected by temperature or frequency, and exhibit extremely low loss, making them ideal for precision signal circuits. Class II capacitors employ common materials like X5R and X7R; characterized by high dielectric constants and high volumetric efficiency (capacitance-to-volume ratio), they are better suited for general energy storage and voltage regulation applications.
